Urethane decomposes, producing inert CO2 gas and toxic ammonia gas, in hot aqueous acid (Lewis, R.J., Sr. 1992. Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, 8th Edition. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold. pp. 3472).
Carbamates are decarboxylated by HCl to liberate inert CO2 gas (Smith, P. A. S., Open-Chain Nitrogen Compounds, Vol. I. New York: W. A. Benjamin, Inc., 1965, pp. 261 and 270).
Potential Gas Byproducts
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
- Ammonia (NH3)
