Bases such as NaOH can exothermically decompose anhydrides to inert CO2 gas, causing pressurization (Davie, W.R. 1964. Chemical and Engineering News 42(8):41; MCA Case History No. 622, Case Histories of Accidents in the Chemical Industry, Washington, Manufacturing Chemists' Association).
NaOH can react very exothermically with succinic anhydride (Hoekstra, M.C. 1984. Synthetic Communications 14:1379-1380).
Potential Gas Byproducts
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
