Carbaryl hydrolyzes in strongly alkaline solutions, producing inert CO2 gas and the water-soluble and toxic compounds 1-naphthol and methylamine. However, it is considered stable in slightly basic or slightly acidic solution (Montgomery, J. 1997. Agrochemicals Desk Reference, 2nd Edition. Boca Raton: CRC Press. pp. 74).
Carbamates may react with bases to liberate toxic and flammable ammonia gas (Predicted).
Potential Gas Byproducts
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
- Ammonia (NH3)
