Hazard Predictions

Ester hydrolysis can occur. For this reaction to be hazardous, the reaction would need to be catalyzed by an acid, base, or another contaminant.

Moisture in a sealed iron drum of diethyl sulfate caused hydrolysis to sulfuric acid, leading to corrosion of the metal and development of a high internal pressure of hydrogen, which ruptured the drum (Bretherick, L. 1996. Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards. Fifth Ed. Urben, P.G., Ed. Butterworth-Heinemann, Boston, MA. Vol. 1, p. 585).

Moisture causes liberation of sulfuric acid from diethyl sulfate (Lewis, R.J., Sr. 2000. Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, 10th Edition. New York: John Wiley & Sons, pp. 1297).
