The mixing of strong bases and organic sulfides may lead to heat generation due to acid-base type of interaction between these groups (Predicted). Strong bases may deprotonate sulfides with a S-H bond and generate flammable H2 gas, in a reaction similar to that of alcohols with strong bases. The amount of heat generated is dependent on the nature of the base and sulfide involved in the reaction. It is recommended that testing be done to determine the specific heats of reaction.
