Alkali and alkali earth metals perform one-electron reductions of thioethers, producing corrosive metal thiolates and metal alkyls. In the presence of proton sources, thiols and alkanes are produced (E. M. Kaiser, Synthesis, 1972, (8), p. 391-415).
Reactions of alkali or alkali earth metals and thiols produce flammable H2 gas and corrosive metal thiolates (W.C. Fernelius and G.W. Watt, Chem. Rev. 1937, 20, p. 195-258).
Potential Gas Byproducts
