In the presence of oxygen, aqueous sodium cyanide reacts with most metals in the finely divided state, forming soluble metal cyanide compounds. This reaction has been widely used in the commercial purification of gold and silver. Lead and platinum are not affected (Pesce, L. D. 2010. Cyanides. Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. 1-29. (Online)).
Aqueous potassium cyanide oxidizes copper with the evolution of hydrogen gas, in the absence of air (Mellor, J.W. 1923. Mellor's Comprehensive Treatise on Inorganic and Theoretical Chemistry. Vol. 3, p. 101. Longmans, Green and Co Ltd.; Kundig, K. J. A. and Dresher, W. H. 2010. Copper. Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. 1-50. (Online)).
Aqueous solutions of hydrogen cyanide can cause stress cracking of carbon steels even at room temperature and in dilute solution (Pesce, L. D. 2010. Cyanides. Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. 1-29. (Online)).
