Hazard Predictions

Acrylonitrile can polymerize violently and exothermically in strong bases, especially at increased temperatures (Castaneda Hernandez, H.R. et al. 1987. Chemical Abstracts 107:78274).

Nitriles can be hydrolyzed to carboxylate salts and toxic, flammable ammonia gas by heating them with strong bases (Loudon, Marc. 2002. Organic Chemistry. 4th ed. New York: Oxford University Press. p. 956).

Acrylonitrile reacts violently with strong bases (Lewis, R.J., Sr. 1992. Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, 8th Edition. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold. pp. 69)

Nitriles and bases are incompatible with each other (Lenga, R.E., ed. 1988. Sigma Aldrich Library of Chemical Safety Data, 2nd Edition. Sigma Aldrich. pp. 21, 59.).
