Hazard Predictions

Anhydrides and weak bases will react by breaking apart the anhydride in a nucleophilic substitution reaction that will release one equivalent of carboxylic acid (Loudon, Marc. 2002. Organic Chemistry. 4th ed. New York: Oxford University Press. p. 966). This carboxylic acid product can further react with the weak base in an exothermic acid-base reaction. These reactions may not generate enough heat to be hazardous. Caution should be used before proceeding. Further research of comparable examples in the literature or very small scale, carefully controlled experiments may be needed to fully assess compatibility.
