Since hemiacetals and hemiketals contain alcohol-like functional groups, they can be expected to react with anhydrides in a similar way to the reaction of alcohols with anhydrides. Acetic anhydride reacts exothermically with alcohols to form esters and carboxylic acids (Wagner, F.S. 2005. Acetic Anhydride. In Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (Online)).
