Reaction of transition metal-alkyl compounds with weak acids can lead to protonolysis of the compound and release of flammable hydrocarbon gases. For example, when dimethyl zirconocene, i.e. (C5H5)2 Zr (CH3)2, reacts with a tertiary ammonium compound (containing an [R3NH]+ cation), methane and a tertiary amine are released (Janiak, C. 2002. Metallocene Catalysts. Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. (Online)).
