Hazard Predictions

The combination of organometallics with acetals, hemiacetals, or ketals may result in reactions of the former with alcohols or ethers similar to the reactions described below:

ALCOHOLS:

Cesium pentacarbonylvanadate (Cs3[V(CO)5]) reacts explosively with alcohols (Ellis, J. F. et al., J. Amer. Chem. Soc., 1981, 103, 6101).

ETHERS:

Solutions of molybdenum hexacarbonyl in diethylether can explode after standing in air for an extended period. Chromium hexacarbonyl in diethylether may behave the same way (Owen, B. B. et al, Inorg. Synth. 1950, 3, 158).
