Strong bases are known to catalyze the hydrolysis of amides, generating amines, some of which are volatile and toxic (Loudon, Marc. 2002. Organic Chemistry. 4th ed. New York: Oxford University Press. p. 954-955). Basic salts may react in the same way, but more slowly.
