Epoxides react with sodium sulfite to generate substituted sodium sulfonates and corrosive sodium hydroxide. This reaction occurs at room temperature (J. D. Swan, Anal. Chem., 1954, 26 (5), pp 878-880; Schenck, R. T. E., Kaizerman, S., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 1953, 75 (7), pp 1636-1641).
Ethylene oxide violently polymerizes on contact with bases, including metal hydroxides, which are the products of the initial reaction between ethylene oxide and sodium sulfite (Gupta, A.K. 1949. J. Soc. Chem. (Ind.) 68:179; Troyan, J.E. et al. 1968. Loss Prevention 2:125-30).
