Thiosulfates decompose to sulfur and sulfur dioxide in acidic solutions (Barberá, J. J., Metzger, A. and Wolf, M. 2000. Sulfites, Thiosulfates, and Dithionites. Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry (Online)).
Sulfites decompose to sulfur dioxide in acidic solutions, including in weak acids (Housecroft, C. E.; Sharpe, A. G. Inorganic Chemistry, 2nd ed.; Pearson: Harlow (England), 2005, p. 459).
In the case of weak acids these reactions may be relatively slow, however, with confinement the concentration of gas will build causing pressurization.
Potential Gas Byproducts
- Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)
- Sulfur Oxides (SOx)
