Acids may initiate the exothermic Beckmann rearrangement of oximes, accompanied by potentially catastrophic gas evolution. Oximes can hydrolyze under acidic conditions, releasing aldehydes or ketones (Bretherick, L. 1996. Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards. Fifth Ed. Urben, P.G., Ed. Butterworth-Heinemann, Boston, MA. Vol 1, p. 569; Vol. 2, p. 278). Phenol is a weak acid and may react in this way, although these reactions are more likely with stronger acids.
