Benzenediazonium salts react with copper (I) cyanide, or alkali metal cyanides in the presence of copper, to form benzonitriles with the release of nitrogen gas. This is a variation of the Sandmeyer reaction. (Rodd, E. H, ed. The Chemistry of Carbon Compounds. New York: Elsevier Publishing Company, 1964. Vol. IIIc, pp. 74).
