- Generates gas: Reaction liberates gaseous products and may cause pressurization
Urethane decomposes in hot aqueous acid, producing toxic ammonia gas and inert CO2 gas (Lewis, R.J., Sr. 1992. Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, 8th Edition. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold. pp. 3472).
Strong acids probably promote this reaction much more than weaker acids do; however, it should be noted that these reactions can occur and over a period of time gas build-up may occur. These reactions may be accelerated by metal salts.
Potential Gas Byproducts
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
- Ammonia (NH3)
