Lithium metal reacts slowly with dry nitrogen at room temperature to form flammable lithium nitride. This reaction mixture may ignite in the presence of water or oxygen (Wietelmann, U. and Bauer, R. Sodium and potassium metal react with dry nitrogen in the presence of an electric discharge to form explosive metal nitrides and metal azides.
